SOP : Emergency Procedures
Pro-Lab Diagnostics & CLIA Laboratory
Purpose:
To ensure the safety of personnel, visitors, and the integrity of lab operations in the event of an emergency, including biological exposure, chemical spills, fires, medical incidents, or equipment failures.

🚨 1. GENERAL EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
✅ **Immediate Response**
* Remain calm and assess the situation quickly.
* Alert others in the vicinity.
* Call **911** for life-threatening emergencies.
* Notify the **Lab Safety Officer (LSO)** and **Lab Director** immediately.

## 🧫 2. BIOLOGICAL EXPOSURE
### Exposure to Infectious Materials:
* **Skin Contact**: Wash thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 minutes.
* **Eye Exposure**: Flush with eyewash station for 15 minutes.
* **Needlestick or Sharps Injury**:
* Encourage bleeding.
* Wash area with soap and water.
* Report to supervisor immediately and complete an **Exposure Incident Report**.
**CLIA Note**: Maintain documentation in accordance with **42 CFR 493.1105** on personnel safety procedures.

## ⚗️ 3. CHEMICAL SPILL
### Small, Contained Spill:
* Wear PPE (gloves, goggles, lab coat).
* Use spill kit: absorbent, neutralizer if required.
* Dispose of cleanup material in hazardous waste container.
* Ventilate area.
### Large Spill or Toxic Gas Release:
* Evacuate immediately.
* Pull fire alarm if necessary.
* Call 911 and inform Facility Safety Officer.

## 🔥 4. FIRE OR EXPLOSION
* Pull nearest **fire alarm**.
* Evacuate using posted exit routes.
* Do **not** use elevators.
* If trained, use fire extinguisher (PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).
* Report to designated assembly point and check in.

## ⚡ 5. POWER FAILURE / EQUIPMENT MALFUNCTION
* Backup generators should activate automatically.
* Secure open chemicals and place critical samples in emergency refrigeration (if required).
* Notify Lab Director and IT/Security.

## 💉 6. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES
* Call 911 immediately.
* Provide CPR/First Aid only if trained.
* Assign someone to meet emergency responders at entrance.
* File an incident report within 24 hours.

## 🚪 7. EVACUATION PROCEDURES
* Follow illuminated exit signs.

* All lab personnel must complete:
* **Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) training**
* **Chemical hygiene and spill response training**
* **CLIA compliance training**
